A dust collector is a high-airflow unit that pulls fine, suspended dust out of the air at the source of a process and self-cleans its filter so it can run all shift. Both are usually on wheels — the difference is airflow-at-source versus suction-through-a-hose. If dust is generated continuously at a machine or line, you want a collector.

The unit pulses the filter cartridges clear while it runs — mechanically or with a jet of compressed air — so fine, clogging dust doesn't blind the filter and cut airflow. That keeps airflow constant on dusts that would quickly choke a simple manual-shake filter, which is why continuous processes use collectors rather than vacuums.
