A welding fume extractor captures smoke and particulate right where it's generated — at the arc or the torch — instead of relying on general workshop ventilation, which HSE no longer treats as sufficient control even for mild-steel welding. Yes. Since 2019, HSE treats all welding fume — including from mild steel — as a carcinogen, and expects effective engineering controls wherever welding takes place. General workshop ventilation is no longer accepted as adequate on its own; controlling exposure at source is a COSHH duty.
